Amidst global ‘silence’, Netanyahu cleansing Gaza of all Palestinians

Behind the non-stop killings in Gaza lies a stark reality — an irreversible Israeli push to reshape the land and erase its people, driven by an unwavering political will and aided by the world’s silence

IN the sun-scorched expanse of the Gaza Strip, history hovers like a spectre over the ruins and rubble. The narrow coastal enclave, once home to about 2.1 million people, now stands at the precipice of irreversible transformation — a forced annexation by Israel marked by the relentless cleansing of Palestinian souls from their ancestral land. Despite their determined refusal to flee, the Palestinians find themselves ensnared in a web of powerlessness.
Bereft of viable defence, they stand witness to a tragedy unraveling with heartbreaking inevitability. The Israeli plan, unveiled through the voices of Israel’s hardline political vanguards, is chilling in its calculated precision. A phased campaign intends to uproot Gaza’s inhabitants, particularly those clustered in Gaza City, compelling them southward under siege and deprivation. This ruthless strategy, veiled in the guise of military necessity, is ostensibly aimed at eradicating Hamas’s influence.
Yet, underpinning it is a more unsettling truth: the wholesale annexation of Gaza, a final and sweeping consolidation of control that brooks no dissent.
Irony drips from this unfolding drama like poison. The incendiary Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, which wrought shock across Israel, have become paradoxically the perfect pretext for this sweeping campaign. What was intended as a blow to Israeli security has spectacularly backfired, decimating not only Hamas but weakening the entire constellation of Palestinian support.
Hezbollah’s armaments have been severely blunted; Iran’s regional influence wavers; and even Syria’s intricate political tapestry has been redrawn to Israel’s advantage. By now the ‘axis of resistance’ has been weakened considerably, almost powerless to stem the tide or challenge Israel’s domination by any meaningful measure.
Meanwhile, the world watches through a cracked lens. There is a global chorus demanding a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, a plea for humanity to return amidst the carnage. Yet Israel, resolute and unyielding, refuses to heed the call. Diplomacy falters as negotiations for peace are undermined by targeted strikes against Hamas leaders who seek dialogue.
Such Israeli acts, unrelenting and brutal, stand as stark testaments to a campaign designed for total annihilation of resistance. The tragedy is compounded by the impotence of the international community — no power marshals the will or means to coerce Israel into restraint, no arbiter stands firm enough to confront this unfolding barbarism.
In the wings of this grim theatre stands American President Donald Trump, whose shadow looms larger over the Middle East than any recent figure. Unlike his predecessors, who at least nominally sought the semblance of balance, Trump’s posture is unambiguous and unwavering. His endorsement of Israeli policies borders on approbation for excess, shunning even the fragile veneer of diplomatic decency.
Earlier this year, Trump proclaimed his intent to effectively take administrative control of Gaza, envisioning the desert strip reborn as a “Riviera of the Middle East” — a redevelopment plan predicated on the forced displacement of millions of Palestinians. His embrace of Israel’s ambitions lends them a dangerous legitimacy, further emboldening actions that many view as violations of international law and human decency.
This vision, grandiose and callous, epitomises the tragic paradox at the heart of the Gaza crisis. A conflict ignited by Palestinian resistance against occupation has become a pretext for their erasure — an ethnic and cultural cleansing masked as military victory. The ghosts of displacement echo louder than ever as Gaza’s night sky darkens under the pall of aerial bombardments and siege.
Pregnant women, children, the elderly — entire generations borne aloft on the tides of despair — are caught between starvation and violence. The very systems that sustain life — food, water, medicine — are systematically dismantled in a slow suffocation.
To the Palestinian inhabitants of Gaza, the refusal to abandon their homes is not merely stubbornness but an unwavering assertion of identity against obliteration. Yet resistance in its armed forms has been shattered. The power asymmetry is as stark as it is cruel. Empowered by international support and unchallenged military might, Israel moves with impunity. The dreams of global justice and peace flutter as faintly as the dust in Gaza’s ruined streets.
In this vast tragedy, the voices clamouring for Palestinian rights scatter against the iron walls of geopolitical realpolitik. Grassroots movements around the world know the monumental task ahead — challenging annexation, exposing injustice, and fostering solidarity amid despair. But the road is steep and fraught with peril, much like Gaza itself, trapped in the crossfire of history and power.
For now, the Gaza Strip stands at a crossroads: a land poised on the edge of erasure or rebirth. The international community faces a test of conscience and courage. Will it watch silently as a people are dispossessed and displaced? Or will it forge a path toward justice and dignity, before the last light in Gaza flickers and fades into silence?
